Year-end Closeout Thoughts

"So This Is Christmas / And what have you done / Another year over / and another has just begun. . . "I'm not much for Christmas music, but John Lennon was a song I can stomach. Because he do not beg the magic of Christmas lights with tights or credit card, it asks you where you are, existentially speaking, here and now. Advertising People collectively are a very self-examination and self-critical band. So while you're polishing off the remains of vacation, here are some things to think about when you start to 2008: Are you really worth anything? How do you contribute to the world? Is our industry to make the world a better place to live? This is not an easy thing to consider. We all do our little Faustian Bargains to pay the bills. Advertising is not brain surgery, but this is not the theft, either. Every year, someone makes a survey of most trusted professions. And ever year, "advertising practitioners" Down at the rank near the bottom "car salesmen. "Believe me, we're not about to turn in the classification of respectability when they repeat the survey this year. Frankly, however, I can not think of a profession in the industrial world, it's purely altruistic efforts. With a simple turn didactic, I could easily be someone in an area most respected, but with questionable motives. As a physician who crawls in bed with pharmaceutical companies and insurers. A lawyer for suckers. Or a teacher more concerned with my tenure-track teaching. However, it is difficult to feel that advertising is really benefiting the world. Customers do not really go, consumers try to avoid it, and the totem of commercial art, we are very weak. However, we are part of the free market mechanism, which is part of the cycle that prevents the products and services in demand, create jobs and wealth for some of the world. Maybe in 2008 we can all apply our expertise for a good cause. I know I will. Recently, I worked for a local organization that receives political refugees. I wrote, shot and edited a video in 48 hours, after being used only once before iMovie. I will not win any awards for this, as I would if I had slapped a sign saying "LUNCHBOX" on the side of a dumpster awareness about homelessness. But that's OK. I got more satisfaction from what I did this year. A roomful of people clapped in appreciation when I showed the final video to the organization. This is something that should be interesting. Doing good from time to time to make the day-to-day grind of the company posting a little easier to swallow? Maybe. But basically, I do not think that's all healthy for ads to walk in thinking they do much good. It's okay to self-hate a little. Creativity is borne of a desire to make the world better with our way of our concepts, our words, our ideas, that apparently nobody can reproduce exactly. There is always a feeling of discontent. Whether the fuel from me, and I suspect most of you fuel. For us, advertising professionals, I think the best thing to do is keep in mind that in 2008, everything can change, and nothing could change. It's up to you. If you can not move your advertising agency before or your client forward, move forward, even if you do in your free time. You'll go much further without the office politics, dramas and processes you back. 2008 will be interesting year. We've got a place-for-grabs presidential election promises to be wild and wicked. The Olympics will shine a light on communist China, which does most of our jewelry and household whom we owe almost one trillion dollars. And the economy is on the brink of a precipice of subprime-induced chaos. When I think of it in those terms, the myriad challenges facing the advertising industry seems relatively insignificant. So, Happy New Year. Hopefully it's good. Without any fear.
